Antiparasitic drug ivermectin suppressed the effect of coronavirus in 48 hours

The antiparasitic drug ivermectin in 48 hours suppressed the action of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which causes the disease COVID-19. The study was published in the scientific journal Antiviral Research.

Ivermectin, an antiparasitic drug, is commonly used to treat worms, pigs, cattle, horses and sheep. In March 1997, WHO approved ivermectin for the treatment of strongyloidiasis in humans.

As part of the study, doctors added ivermectin to coronavirus-infected cells. The results of the experiment showed that after 24 hours the proportion of viral RNA in the cells decreased by 93%, and after 48 hours – by 99%.

According to scientists, a single treatment can cause a decrease in the virus population in 48 hours by 5 thousand times. It is possible that in the future, on the basis of ivermectin, it will be possible to create a drug that will fight the pandemic of coronavirus infection.
