A group of Chinese scientists has identified several antibodies that “extremely efficiently” block the penetration of a new coronavirus into cells. This finding may help in the treatment or prevention of COVID-19.
Back in early January 2020, several groups of Chinese researchers analyzed antibodies from the blood of a patient who recovered from COVID-19. Then scientists identified 206 monoclonal antibodies, which showed the ability to fight the virus. Now scientists are focusing on identifying the most powerful antibodies and, possibly, combine them to reduce the risk of mutation of a new coronavirus.
Zhang Linqi from Tsinghua University in Beijing noted that a drug made using antibodies found by his team can be used more effectively than current approaches to blocking the virus.
According to Zhang, among the first 20 antibodies tested, 4 were able to block the penetration of the virus, and 2 of them did it faster and more efficiently than the others. Researchers have published the results on the Internet and hope that antibodies will be tested in humans within 6 months.
