In Brooklyn, New York, an unknown vandal attacked a Catholic church, smashed a statue of Jesus, and burned an American flag.
The NYPD is calling the incident a hate crime. It occurred around 10 p.m. on Thursday, May 13. According to law enforcement, a vandal toppled a statue of the crucifixion of Jesus and set fire to an American flag hanging near the rectory. This is reported by the Fox News channel.
The church’s pastor, David Cassato, discovered the vandalism around 8 am on May 14. The NYPD is investigating the incident.
“It was truly an act of hatred, and today is the saddest day in my twenty years in this parish. I talked to the school students about what had happened, telling them that hate never wins. We are and should be, a community that continues to share the message of Easter. What are love, hope, and forgiveness,” the pastor said.
The crucifix was erected in 2010 to commemorate Cassato’s mother, police said in a statement.
