Amid the pandemic, the intensity of attacks on the Internet of Things increased by 8 times

In its IoT in the Enterprise: Empty Office Edition report, Zscaler, a cloud provider of information security services for enterprises, notes a dramatic increase in attacks on Internet of Things (IoT) devices amid the ongoing pandemic.

During the two-week period last December, there were approximately 300,000 intrusion attempts using malicious software for IoT platforms. This is eight times, or 700%, higher than the figures that Zscaler systems recorded before the start of the pandemic.

Almost all IoT malware belongs to the Gafgyt and Mirai families. Approximately 60% of attacks originate from China. Further in the ranking of source countries are the United States and India. Ireland (48%), the United States (32%) and China (14%) are most affected by IoT attacks.

The most frequently attacked targets of cybercriminals are currently all kinds of set-top boxes (29%), smart TVs (20%) and smart watches (15%). Among the IoT devices that are usually ignored by IT departments, researchers noted cars, “smart” refrigerators and memory cards with Wi-Fi – all of them go online and access cloud resources.

However, the victims of attacks are most often enterprises in the field of manufacturing, trade and health care. At the same time, the most “sociable” were corporate devices in the first two areas. Worst of all, even in healthcare, data exchange is only secured in half of the cases, although, as the study authors note, all 553 identified devices support encryption of traffic.
