American kid with “Batman mask” will be cured in Russia

A six-month-old girl with a rare birth defect, which caused a huge birthmark to appear on her face, will go from the US to Russia for treatment.

Luna Fenner from South Florida was born with a congenital melanocytic nevus. The anomaly was diagnosed six days after the baby was born and manifested as dark spots on the face, similar to a Batman mask. According to Luna’s mother Carol, the disease was not known until birth.

Now Luna is 6 months old. Doctors who examined the girl said that the baby will have to undergo about a hundred operations, and some doctors refused treatment at all. However, the parents were contacted by a surgeon and oncologist from Krasnodar Pavel Popov, who read about Luna in the newspaper.

The medic proposed an innovative treatment not available in the US. Its essence is that under the affected area, a special drug “grows” new skin, and then the pigmentation is reduced by laser surgery. Parents decided to try.

The baby will go to Krasnodar tomorrow. She is expected to undergo 6 to 8 surgeries, each of which will cost about $ 25,000. “In the US, it will take four years to treat Luna, but in Russia, I was told, it will take 18 months,” said Carol Fenner.

“Everyone thought I was crazy, just decided to go to Russia. But I consulted with many doctors and believe that this is the best option for Luna,” — said the mother of the child, adding that she does not want the baby to be bullied, especially when she goes to school.
