Researchers at Alphabet have presented a technology for distributing the Internet using light. The advantage of the method is that it does not require poles or trenches.
Google’s subsidiary has unveiled Project Taara, an Internet distribution project that uses developments in space communications technology (FSOC). It has already been tested in several localities in Andhra Pradesh, India. The system implies the reception of signals by base stations from probes in an optical way. Also, the stations will be able to connect to each other via optical signals.
The team successfully used FSOC to send a copy of True Genius between devices that were more than 100 kilometers apart. After that, they decided to use the technology on the ground. FSOC uses light as fiber optic cables, it doesn’t need poles or trenches. Lower costs will make the Internet distribution method cheaper and easier, especially in areas with many mountains, rivers or national parks.
The company has already started working with telecommunications company Econet to distribute the internet using lights in Kenya. The partner’s capacities will allow you to receive and distribute the Internet in the cities and villages of the country.
The working altitude for the probes is 20 km, the researchers chose this altitude, since planes do not fly on it, and the devices cannot damage the rains. They need to launch hundreds of probes that can cover all of Kenya with their access. The researchers point out that there is no other way to connect this country to the Internet.
The stations for receiving signals will be installed on roofs and poles. The approximate throughput of the technology is 20 Gbps. This is enough to watch YouTube videos.
