A record number of migrants have arrived in Britain across the English Channel

More than 480 illegal migrants arrived in the UK in a day through the English Channel, which separates the island from continental Europe; this is a new record figure, Sky News reports, citing data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the United Kingdom.

“A record number, 482 migrants, crossed the Channel yesterday,” the TV channel reported.

Illegal migrants often look for any opportunity to cross the English Channel and end up in the UK, where they are attracted by a social program, the possibility of obtaining refugee status, and financial benefits. The UK and France agreed in July to strengthen the fight against illegal immigration. In particular, the document provides that the number of police officers patrolling French beaches will more than double to prevent the departure of boats from the French coast of the strait.
