A huge iceberg has broken off from the Brunt Ice shelf in Antarctica, British researchers have announced.

In terms of its area (1,270 square kilometers), the iceberg exceeds the area of New York (782 square kilometers).

According to media reports, the last time a large piece of ice in the area broke off was in the early 1970s.
