5G devices accounted for less than 1% of smartphones sold in 2019 in the US market. According to TechCrunch, this figure reflects the global sales level of these devices.
In the second half of 2019, the number of 5G smartphones sold by LG, OnePlus and Samsung increased by 9 times compared to the first half of the year. In total, 13.5 million smartphones with support for 5G technology fell on the global market in 2019, in 2020 this figure can grow to 236 million devices. At the same time, the publication notes that the study was conducted even before the coronavirus infection was declared a pandemic, therefore, it did not take into account the decline in global markets this year.
In addition, 9 out of 10 US users are aware of the existence of 5G technology and are waiting for its scaling in the coming years, the publication notes. However, it is still not clear when this indicator will turn into real sales.
Now 5G networks work only in the test period in some places in the USA, China and South Korea. In the coming years, they should appear in the public domain, then the demand for smartphones that support this technology will increase sharply.
