1,116 US enterprises are responsible for 50% of all greenhouse gas emissions. This conclusion was made by scientists from the University of California, whose work was published in the journal Environmental Research Letters.
At the beginning of 2019, the concentration of carbon dioxide was 410 ppm. This indicator is constantly growing – the researchers calculated that if the level of CO₂ emissions remains at the level of 37 million tons per year, by the beginning of the XXII century the concentration will increase to 1,200–1,300 parts.
An increase in the proportion of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere excites scientists because of its heat-absorbing properties. Earth and the ocean on the planet absorb and release heat, and it is delayed by carbon dioxide molecules. An increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases leads to an increase in temperature on the surface of the planet.
A threefold increase in the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere — up to 1,300 parts of CO₂ per million — can lead to the disappearance of the layer of cumulus clouds above the ocean. This event, which may occur in the XXII century, will lead to the heating of the ocean at 8 ° C, scientists from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory found earlier.
In a new work, scientists investigated toxic and greenhouse gas emissions from more than 25 thousand enterprises in the USA in 322 manufacturing industries from 1998 to 2012. The study showed that a small number of companies are responsible for most of the harmful emissions – this is about 1,116 enterprises.
According to the researchers, these companies account for more than 50% of all industrial emissions in annual terms. Targeted work with these enterprises will significantly reduce the concentration of toxic and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the authors conclude.
